Balaam and His Donkey (Numbers 22:21-34)
Once upon a time, in a land where ancient stories whispered through the hills and valleys, there lived a man named Balaam. Balaam was known far and wide as a prophet, someone who could hear the voice of God and speak His words to the people.
One day, Balaam was called upon by powerful kings who wanted him to curse a people called Israel. They were afraid of Israel's strength and wanted to weaken them with Balaam's words. So Balaam saddled his donkey and set off on his journey.
Now, Balaam's donkey was a faithful companion, strong and sure-footed. As they traveled along a narrow path between two fields, something extraordinary happened. The donkey suddenly stopped in its tracks and refused to move forward. Balaam, puzzled by the donkey's behavior, grew impatient and struck the animal to make it continue on its way.
But then, to Balaam's surprise, the donkey turned and spoke to him! "What have I done to you to make you beat me three times?" the donkey asked with a voice that seemed to come from nowhere.
Balaam was astonished and replied, "You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now."
But the donkey spoke again, "Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?"
Then Balaam's eyes were opened, and he saw what the donkey saw: an angel of the Lord standing in the road with a sword drawn. The angel's presence was fearsome, and it was blocking the way forward.
The angel spoke to Balaam, "Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it."
Balaam fell to his knees in awe and fear, realizing that God's hand was upon this journey. He confessed his wrongdoing and offered to turn back, but the angel commanded him to continue, with the condition that he would speak only the words God gave him.
So Balaam journeyed on to meet the kings, but instead of cursing Israel, he blessed them as the Lord instructed. From that day forward, Balaam learned the importance of obedience and listening to God's voice, even when it comes through unexpected ways like a speaking donkey.
And so, the story of Balaam and his donkey teaches us all, young and old alike, that God's plans are higher than our own, and His ways are full of surprises. It reminds us to listen carefully for His voice and to obey Him with humble hearts, trusting that His guidance will always lead us on the right path.
